Too many memes make it seem like you can just hack our way into a tech job. Some of us are designers and cannot hack our way out of an email subscription, people!
There are very many jobs in the tech industry, and they just keep coming up. There is literally no end to the jobs constantly being created in the tech industry. However, in spite of this, there are also numerous people going out and applying for the same jobs you have your eyes on. Competition is tough, because tech jobs pay well and everyone knows it now. Jobs are snatched up as soon as they land, so whether you’re just getting in or trying to land a bigger role at a better place, you have got to be seen.
How do you intend to stand out?
It’s definitely not by wearing a t-shirt that glows and says “I’m awesome.” The tech industry cares more about what you can do than what you say you can do, or what your t-shirt says you can do.
Will it be easy? Nope.
Worth it? Absolutely.

Work hard and prove your knowledge
As said before, the tech industry cares more about what you can actually do than your certifications and qualifications and whatnot. So, what are you going to do? A lot of work, that’s what. Well, it doesn’t have to be a lot of work as much as it has to be really good work. Create a portfolio full of really good work, and do your best to continue to improve and upgrade our portfolio. There’s no better door opener than proof. It saves you a lot of talking and a lot of convincing. You won’t even have to bust out your “I’m amazing” t-shirt.
Practice a lot by volunteering a bunch
Do not be afraid to take on challenging volunteer projects. They are your opportunity to shine, and you need all the glitter you can get. With most volunteer projects, you may not be restricted as much. There’ will be a box, but it’s usually a much bigger box, so you have space to explore and implement your ideas. These are good for improving your skills and increasing the quality of your portfolio.
Toddlers learning to walk do better when they’re alone with their family than at the park or at daycare. This is because they are comfortable, and they know that they can make mistakes and not be judged; at least, I think that’s what they’re thinking. Communities are a great place for you to grow. Seeing others like you who have gone where you’re going challenges you. Not just that, you can share your fears and limitations comfortably, knowing that you’re going to get help and not criticism. So, find a great community of people who have or have had the same challenges you do, and thrive. Members can also show you the industry tricks to help you land your dream job, and maybe even recommend you for some.
It actually never hurts to blow your own trumpet. It’s a great way to draw attention. Use social media to your advantage to share your journey with the world. Share your growth and your achievements; don’t hold back. Social media is the best place to brag without feeling guilty; that’s because everyone is doing it. Talk yourself up on social media, and stand a chance to get noticed by the companies you’re pursuing. Share tips, teach people; ultimately show everyone that you know what you’re doing.
You can do anything, and that’s a fact. Go get what’s yours!
